We were out celebrating our 15 year old’s birthday with dinner and a trip to the mall. During his shopping spree, he purchased a hat for a lot of money that had a design on the front that I didn’t recognize. As I inspected his purchase, I saw that it was of good quality, but in my eyes, overpriced.
Asked why he bought it, he said simply...”CAUSE IT’S COOL”
HMMM
I thought about this for the rest of the night. What makes something “COOL”? Could something “COOL” be made with good marketing and reasonable prices?
On the way home, I stated to the car that I could make a hat with a design that didn’t necessarily mean anything to anybody, put it on the Internet, and sell at least 1 within 6 months.
“Yeah right” (the kids)
“Honey, better let me drive, you drank too much at the restaurant” (the wife)
“Pant, Pant, Pant” (the dog)
All of this support not withstanding, I was getting edgy at the idea. The challenges of sailing into the unknown were nipping at my rear. So in a fit of euphoria, (verging on nausea) I blurted out “WANNA BET?”
There it was, I’d laid myself bare, and had no choice but to follow through with it.
My family by now knew that either I had gone off the deep end, (I’m an Electrical Contractor for crimeny sake) or that I was deadly serious (but still a contractor). So they all started pitching in with ideas. My 17 year old came up with “Get Wired!” as a slogan (Electrical again...get it?), and GET WIRED! GEAR was born.
We haven’t looked back. Our first order came in at just under 6 months, but by then we were hooked. Our company is a family venture with everybody pitching in from design to shipping. Even the electrical crew is involved, wearing the gear and giving our the site address.
So I guess I won. Besides, the only thing I’ve ever really bet on is myself, my family, and my employees.
We hope you like our gear!
Wanna Bet?
